Insights into the origin of perylene from isotopic analyses of sediments from Saanich Inlet, British Columbia

چکیده
Perylene is an abundant and common polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon in sedimentary settings, yet its origin remains puzzling. We have investigated the relation of perylene to the amount and type of organic matter in the sediments of Saanich Inlet, a coastal marine anoxic basin. Organic matter is predominantly marine in origin, but the proportions of marine and land-derived components have varied. Perylene concentrations generally increase with sediment depth, relative to TOC, which indicates continued formation of this compound by microbially mediated diagenesis. Perylene dC values range between ÿ27.7 and ÿ23.6%, whereas TOC dC values vary narrowly from ÿ21.7 to ÿ21.2% over the same sediment depth interval. The variation in isotopic dierence suggests that perylene originates from more than one precursor material, both aquatic and continental organic matter, dierent microbial processes, or some combination of these possibilities. # 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. Record of large, Late Pleistocene outburst floods preserved in Saanich Inlet sediments, Vancouver Island, Canada
Two anomalous, gray, silty clay beds are present in ODP cores collected from Saanich Inlet, Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. The beds, which date to about 10,500 C yr BP (11,000 calendar years BP), contain Tertiary pollen derived from sedimentary rocks found only in the Fraser Lowland, on the mainland of British Columbia and Washington just east of the Strait of Georgia. Abundant ill...

Background and Objectives: This study was performed to determine and identify the origin, concentration and source of perylene entry and some PAH compounds in surface sediments of Ghalam Goodeh (A), Siyah Kashim (B), and Talab Markazi (C) in Anzali wetland. Materials and methods: We collected 22 samples of sediments (from each region) and 2 samples of soils (from A region) in April of 2012. Sam...
متن کاملEat and run: anoxic feeding and subsequent aerobic recovery by Orchomene obtusus in Saanich Inlet, British Columbia, Canada
The lysianassid amphipod Orchomene obtusus (Sars) is known as an epibenthic scavenger, but it is abundant in the water column of Saanich Inlet, British Columbia, a temperate fjord with poorly oxygenated deep water. Sampling with vertically-stratified nets and baited traps indicates that O. obtusus is abundant within the oxycline at 100 to 140 m, is present in anoxic deep waters at low abundance...

متن کاملA compendium of geochemical information from the Saanich Inlet water column
Extensive and expanding oxygen minimum zones (OMZs) exist at variable depths in coastal and open ocean waters. As oxygen levels decline, nutrients and energy are increasingly diverted away from higher trophic levels into microbial community metabolism, resulting in fixed nitrogen loss and production of climate active trace gases including nitrous oxide and methane. While ocean deoxygenation has...
